Search Results Page

Search Results Page

The Search Results summary pages are reached by using either the Search box or the Advanced Search page.

Each summary page indicates the total number of results found and a numbered list of results in descending order of correspondence to the complete search criteria. Results are displayed in pages containing 10 hits each.

To enable navigation of search results, links to each summary page of results can be found (where appropriate) at the foot of every summary page.

Each result in the list consists of the hit ranking number, a hyperlink to the entry page where full details can be found, and contextual information about the result: an extract from the entry, the title of the book in which it was found and the word-count of the entry.

Clicking on the hyperlink at the start of a search result takes you to the relevant entry page. Search terms are highlighted on entry pages.

The entry pages for a set of search results can be browsed (without returning to the summary page) by clicking the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons.

Refine Search

If the number of results for a particular search is too high, it is possible to refine the results (without starting your search again) using the options on the left-hand side of the results summary page.

By Book

Below this heading is a list of the books within which search results were found. Each title is followed by a parenthesized figure indicating the number of results found in that book. Selecting a title from the list restricts the search results to that book.

By Length

Search results can be restricted to either longer articles (500 words and over) or shorter articles (under 500 words) by clicking one of these options below the By Length heading. The number of results found in each category is indicated by a parenthesized figure.

By Subject

Below this heading is a list of the subject areas within which search results were found. The subject terms are the same as those used in the subject classification (see Browse Subjects). The number of results found in each subject is indicated by a parenthesized figure. Search results can be restricted to a particular subject by clicking that subject in the list.

Advanced Search Page

Tick the boxes corresponding to the book titles you want to include in your search, or tick Select All.

When you have finished specifying the full criteria for your search, click the SEARCH button at the bottom of the page or press the Enter key to proceed with the search.

Search Types

The default search type is Boolean. Pattern (spell-check) searches can be performed by adding ~ before the search term.
